The Bower is a tribute to Southern gentility in the face of cruel war’s oppression. She is the Mother, Sister, Wife, and Sweetheart of the noble soldiers whose blood christened the battlefields in defense of hearth and home. She is every woman whose only means of fighting was in the never-failing emotional support of their loved ones at the front–writing letters of cheer amid tears of anguish, words of hope when, even at home, there was precious little else, and perhaps, pausing in mid-sentence to remember
