After seemingly lifetimes of war and separation, the two wedded lovers rejoin in joyful reunion, never more to be apart. He, the warrior Captain in the Confederate cavalry, returned from war’s journey of desolation and strife; she ever-loving and patient, bearing her own suffering in silence awaiting this, the longed-for day she would again receive him in her warm embrace.

At a higher level “The Homecoming” depicts the reunion of the feminine/masculine polarities in the perfect balance of “yin” and “yang,” first within the individual and ultimately between soul-mates. The male/positive polarity-the rational mind-identified by the saber, is balanced with the female/negative polarity-the emotional heart-identified by the rose she brings as a gift. The two spiral together to become one, after many sojourns around the now finally broken wheel of Karma. The joy, physical and spiritual, of this final reunion speaks for itself.

“We dance round in a ring and suppose,
But the Secret sits in the middle and Knows.”

Robert Frost
